What is a patent?

A patent is a type of intellectual property (IP) that gives its owner the legal right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an invention for up to 20 years, in exchange for publishing an enabling disclosure of the invention

Why do I need a patent?

Answer A patent registers your invention and lets you take legal action against anyone who makes, uses, sells or imports your invention without your permission. It thus protects your invention from copying by competitors.

Can I commercialise my invention if I have a patent for it?

Answer – no, this is a common misconception. Even though you may have a patent for your invention that does not give you freedom to use it. A patent does not give the owner an automatic right to use the invention. The patent owner must still take care to avoid infringing other people’s rights, and I can advise on how to search for and avoid competitor’s patents.
